IPv4 vs IPv6

A clear comparison between IPv4 and IPv6 in speed, size, compatibility and deployment.

IPv4 and IPv6 both identify devices on networks, but they differ in address length, available space and deployment patterns.

IPv4 is shorter and more familiar. IPv6 is larger, more future-proof, and increasingly adopted worldwide.

Main differences

  • IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses
  • IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses
  • IPv4 is older and very common
  • IPv6 is newer and built for scale
